
The Nikon 70-200 VR is currently, in my opinion the bargain lens to get for any amateur and even serious photographers. It has been superseded by the 70-200 VR II which is a complete re-design optically and costs nearly double of that a used mint conditioned version 1 costs. Why would you spend more if you don’t need it?

This is not a rant, this is and actual incident! I own and owned the renowned Nikon AF-s 24-85 f3.5-4.5 lens. Recently the AF-s motor in the lens broke and I looked for a replacement. After a long search, I found a brand new copy at a local store with a full warranty so I decided to disect the broken lens, clean it and learn how the lens design works. I am curious by nature so when I have nothing to loose, I dig. What I found inside disappointed me very much. Nikon quality assurance, CLEARLY did not work in this case.

purchased a 16GB Lexar Professional 600x UDMA card to finally jump over the buffer limit that the Nikon D700 has. The 17frames per second in RAW (14bit) mode is quite slow, especially since the Nikon D700 Manual (page 423) says a UDMA card should give me 23 frames in the buffer. Wow, we finally did it, over 500 unique lenses in our database. This Lens database serves actually 2 purposes, 1) find information on pretty much any nikon lens that will mount on a modern DSLR and 2) historic value. Look how the 24mm lens has changed over the decades; want to see an old 43mm lens? No problem. The list of possibilities goes on.
